A large proportion of young people who will be sailing on Challenge Wales will not be familiar with a sailing environment. However, sailing can be fun, exhilarating and challenging but also teach key skills which will be needed in later life. Through sailing individuals can learn how to work successfully as part of a team understanding that everyone needs to pull together. Communication skills can be developed and understanding the importance of working towards a goal. Believe me, it is a great feeling knowing that you have sailed 1000 miles across open seas and that achievement is because of everybody pulling their weight together.
Some crew members have already experienced sailing but want to develop their skills further on a larger yacht, while others are looking at training as future crew on this or other similar sail training vessels.
However, these are not the only reasons why people become crew members. Some crew are looking at a change of scene from their fast paced working lives and finding a way of using their current skills in a different environment. While others become crew members to help others get the most out of the adventure.
