Shore-side volunteers help with non-sailing activities. These may still happen on Challenge Wales but also off the boat.

Opportunities include:

  • Ship Shape activities (maintenance (skilled and unskilled) / Deep Cleaning). Ships Shape Maintenance Days happen every Wednesday the boat isn’t sailing and also for 4 weeks during the winter (either locally or on the South Coast)
  • Stock taking (this happens before we do a 5 day residential or longer) and at various times of the year
  • Undertaking Guided Boat Tours at Festivals that Challenge Wales is attending (e.g. North Wales Boat Show, Cardiff Harbour Festival, Bristol Harbour Festival). Don’t worry we give training and if you are helping all day then you will get lunch too!
  • Manning a stand – Challenge Wales will have a stand at youth events, community events and festivals and this is an opportunity to talk to people and tell them about Challenge Wales
  • Market Research – Challenge Wales undertakes ongoing research into particular areas and it is usually our volunteers who assist with this from a computer at home. This includes researching voyages our competitors are doing to identifying how science projects can link in with our work. The office will give you a set task to do, you go off and research it and then give the details to the office with your thoughts.
  • Fundraising/Awareness – We are always looking for organisations to talk to (such as Rotary Clubs, Probus Clubs, Yacht Clubs etc, who would often give us a donation for this), someone to develop fundraising ideas (cake bakes, sponsored activities, charity of the year), someone to speak to shops/pubs about making us their charity of their year and/or taking a collection pot or just simply putting up a poster. You might spend an hour a week doing this or an hour a month!

If you have an idea then please email Vicky@challengewales.org or if you want to help more generally then please email reservations@challengewales.org
