Fundraising and Volunteers

We are here to help young people and together we can

To enable as many young people and young adults between 12 and 25 years old as possible to experience the benefits of sail training on Challenge Wales and to give them a different outlook in life, funds need to be raised. Challenge Wales offers those in this age group (whether joining us as an individual or as part of a group) a discount on the cost of sailing in the form of a Challenge Wales Bursary, if eligible and if funds are available.

There are many reasons why people may apply for a bursary, a few are listed below:

  • Young people who have been affected by family trauma
  • Young people who are carers for an older relative
  • Young people who require help developing core skills for adulthood
  • Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Young people with an ambition for a career at sea
  • Young people unable to afford all the costs

Please note that the above are only some examples. We value that each young person is different and has individual needs and circumstances. In terms of bursaries we treat everybody individually based on their circumstances.

Funds are also required to maintain the boat on a daily basis to ensure the boat remains safe and is fit for purpose. These funds are generated through the commercial activity that Challenge Wales undertakes such as big boat sailing days for adults or corporate team building activity.

Challenge Wales is run by volunteers with no salaried staff. This means that donations and revenue generated from sailing trips and corporate activity, goes straight back into the charity to directly help young people. There are various ways you can help raise funds for Challenge Wales, from a simple text donation and undertaking sponsored activities to sailing with us, giving a one-off donation or supporting us in one of a variety of easy ways that in most cases won’t cost you any money! Companies also have the opportunity to support us through in-kind donations, sailing with us, giving staff the opportunity to volunteer, working with us if you have a Corporate Social Responsibility programme or through sponsorship.
